 Ember was born in a time when Ice Dragon slavery was completely normal. The dragons of the past had been mostly forgotten, as had most of the history as the Fire Dragons of the time fought to obscure the details as much as possible.

The story Ember overhears in Chapter One is the story all young Fire Dragons are taught. It tells them why the Fire Dragons are superior, and why the Ice Dragons must always be dealt with a firm claw. The reason he hadn't been told the story as of that time, when he is already four years old, is because as the Crown Prince, most of his lessons and 'stories' have been focusing on great kings and queens of the past, preparing him for the throne.

After he was returned to his keeper that night, Ember's studies began to cover how to handle Ice Dragons, and with his already determined view that the Ice Dragons were being treated much too unfairly, all they served to do was further his mindset.

Despite his own personal views about the Ice Dragons, Ember acts like most of his family regarding them. This is because he knows he will have much better chance of changing things when he is king, and he won't be crowned if he is viewed as insane, or corrupted by the Ice Dragons.
