Crystal is two years younger than Prince Ember. A few days after she hatched from her egg, Crystal was selected to be a servant of the castle. The advisor who picked her out had the guards with him carve a diamond shape into her neck. This careful cut took out her voice-box, but kept her ability to breath ice intact.
When Crystal was only a few years old, she made a vow to herself that whatever it took she would free her fellow Ice Dragons from slavery. Even after she turned ten and was sent to the castle, Crystal continued to work on doing whatever she could to fulfill her promise.
Now the personal servant of Prince Ember, who seems to be as determined as she, Crystal is struggling whether or not to trust him, considering her entire life has been spent being taught that Fire Dragons will do everything they can to hurt her.
