Ice Dragons - The In-Depth Guide

In this post, we are going to take a good look at Ice Dragons. All scale and feather colors they can have, all mutations that can appear in their species and more.

This is a typical Ice Dragon
Ice Dragons have the ability to breathe ice and snow from their mouth. Their scales are extremely hard, and nearly impossible to break. They also radiate a natural coldness. Their wings are feathered, and these feathers also appear on the tip of their tails and behind their ears.

Ice Dragons have four solid colors they can be born with. White, Light Gray, Dark Gray, and Black. White being the most common, followed by the grays, and black being the rarest, due to its dark coloring.

They can also be born with what is known as Bi-Coloring. Where two colors appear on their body. The most common of this is different shades of gray, followed by gray and black. The rarest is black and white.

On a very rare occasion, a Bi-Colored Ice Dragon will be born with black markings around their eyes. When this happens, the Ice Dragon is killed, since Ice Dragons are viewed as the lower class, and having one of them be born with one of the Fire Dragons signature traits is disgusting in the view of the Fire Dragons.

The feathers of the Ice Dragons come in a much wider variety. Normal Ice Dragons can have white, gray (again pale and dark), and black feathers. Typically their feathers will be in a similar shade to their feathers, but it is not unheard of for a white Ice Dragon to have black feathers, and vice versa. There is no rarity when it comes to normal Ice Dragon feather color, as all colors have been found on all dragons. The ruff is always solid-color, but in the case of Bi-Colors and Shimmer-Wings the tail and wings can have stripes of different colors.

Bi-Colored Ice Dragons have a stripe of a second color in their wings. This colored stripe is always the same color as their secondary color.

Then there are the Shimmer-Wings. As stated in a previous post, Shimmer-Wings can have purple, blue, pink, and green feathers. They will always have a stripe of a paler shade in their feathers. An Ice Dragon can never be Bi-Color and a Shimmer-Wing, but if they were, it is likely their feathers would have three colors, the primary, the lighter, and their secondary scale.

Before we move onto mutations, let's take one final look at the natural appearances in Ice Dragons, their eye colors. Ice Dragons have six different eye colors, no exceptions. These colors are Silver, Black, Green, Blue, Purple, and Teal.

Now that we've covered the basic appearances, its time to turn to mutations. First, lets look at ones that effect the body of Ice Dragons.

First off, is Bare-Tail, when an Ice Dragon is hatched with no tail feathers. While this doesn't physically harm the Ice Dragon, it does impede on their ability to sign Talon-Speak, as tail-feathers are used in a fair number of signs.
Thankfully, there have been no recorded Ice Dragons who have been born without their ruff, as the ruff is one of the most important parts of the Ice Dragon's body. With it they convey emotion, sign Talon-Speak, and more.

While we're on the topic of feathers, our next mutation is called Longfeather. As the name suggests, Ice Dragons born with Longfeather have longer ruff and tail feathers.

Moving on from feathers, there's only one known mutation that effects the horns of an Ice Dragon. This mutation is called by the simple name of Upturned Horns. Though dragons with this mutation aren't killed (since Fire Dragons have upward turned horns as well) They are usually treated a little worse, as though to ensure they know that they are inferior.
And that's it, I hope you've enjoyed this in-depth guide on the Ice Dragons, and if you have any questions please ask!

Soon there will be an In-Depth guide on Fire Dragons coming, so be sure to keep an eye out for that!
